This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application. Education: Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. Licensure: Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. AND must meet Nurse Practitioner Requirements: NP Licensure: Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional Nurse Practitioner in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. Nurse Practitioners Education and Certification: Must possess a master's degree from a program accredited by the NLNAC or CCNE, and maintain full and current certification as a nurse practitioner from the American Nurses Association or another nationally recognized certifying body. The certification must be in the specialty to which the individual is being appointed or selected. Preferred Experience: Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification required Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Prescriptive privileges (Nurse Practitioner Furnishing Number) with a current DEA Licensure from the United States Drug Enforcement Administration for scheduled II-V controlled substances with demonstration of meeting California State Board of Nursing requirements to prescribe controlled substances. 1-3 years of current ( within the last 3 years) clinical experience working with surgical specialty, or acute hospital care setting Recent (within 1-3 years) procedural experience. Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade: Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience. Physical Requirements: This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. The Nurse Practitioner - Surgical will be responsible for the performance of approved surgical procedures, including first assisting and the provision of comprehensive peri-operative care delivery. This position requires on call duties and critical decision making capability in the delivery of surgical care. Major Duties but not limited to: Executes position responsibilities that demonstrate leadership, experience, and creative approaches to management of complex client care. Provides leadership and oversight while functioning as an agent of the surgeon and member of the surgical team who is well versed in surgical aspects of care, including proficient knowledge of anatomy and physiology. Engages in the comprehensive aspects of care for the patient in the outpatient and inpatient setting. In conjunction with the staff surgeon - prioritizes, collaborates, delegates, and engages in facility performance measures in an effort to provide excellent care delivery processes in an efficient and safe manner. Assumes responsibility for review of all routine consults and communicate with requesting providers regarding additional testing. Functions as a readily available resource in the facilitation of subspecialty surgical care in the ED, CBOC, as well as Primary Care settings. This may require occasional clinics to be held at CBOCs when appropriate, by designated subspecialty. Assumes a clinical load to facilitate clinic utilization and decrease waiting times. Applies the nursing process to systems or processes at the unit/team/work group level to improve care. Demonstrates leadership by involving others in improving care. Supports and enhances client self-determination. Serves as a resource for clients and staff in addressing ethical issues. Identifies and assesses resource utilization and safety issues, taking appropriate action. Acquires knowledge and skills to maintain expertise in area of practice. Participates in educational activities to improve clinical knowledge and enhance role performance. Evaluates practice of self and others using professional standards, relevant statutes, and regulations. Takes action to improve performance.
