The full time permanent GS-12 Senior Social Worker serves in the Menlo Park, California Community Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC) in the Social Work Service Line of the VA Palo Alto Health Care System. The Senior Social worker serves at the the Western Blind Rehabilitation Center. The Western Blind Rehabilitation Center (WBRC) was established in 1967 at the VA Palo Alto Health Care System. WBRC is a 27-bed residential facility located at the Menlo Park Division of the VA Palo Alto Health Care System. Approximately 200 men and women of all ages participate in the program each year. More than three quarters have usable vision for which specialized treatment is provided. Adjusting to and managing visual impairment is the major objective of the program. Major duties include, but are not limited to: Provides comprehensive professional social work services to Veterans, military service members, and their families who are patients of the Western Blind Rehabilitation Center (WBRC) at the VA Palo Alto Health Care System. Develops and manages psychosocially oriented clinical initiative programs for the center and innovations in practice interventions. The incumbent also has responsibility for the development of and day-to-day clinical and administrative management of the interdisciplinary Psychosocial Rounds, Sight Loss Discussion Groups as well as the Family Training Program which includes oversight of programs developed as special clinical initiatives. Provides consultation to social workers and other medical staff across the VA Palo Alto sites. Provides independent and expert clinical psychosocial and case management services in a specialized area of Blind Rehabilitation to Veterans who tend to have serious and severe crises, may lack any familial and community support, may be poor self-monitors, may frequently fail to comply with instructions and treatment, or may have major deficits in coping skills and require continuing professional psychological support. Provides individual, group, and family psychotherapy and advanced level case management interventions used in the treatment of veterans with disorders associated with vision loss. The incumbent will also provide social work case management coverage for the inpatient Polytrauma Rehabilitation Center (PRC) as needed.
