This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. The Bed Control RN functions as the primary coordinator for intra-facility and inter-facility transfers, at the Birmingham VA Medical Center. This includes approximately 550 admissions, per month, from the emergency room, outpatient clinics, sister VA facilities, and community hospitals. The incumbent collaborates with physicians and other stakeholders to help assure correct patient placement into the appropriate status, level of care and unit. The Bed Control RN continually assesses and re-evaluates processes relative to placing patients in the hospital, and provides for on-going improvement. Duties include but are not limited to:- Accurately manage the Bed Management System (BMS) and other electronic patient tracking systems, throughout the medical center to manage internal and external bed and transfer requests.- Collaborate with medical center departments to manage and resolve bed utilization issues.- Educate internal and external customers on the admission/transfer process.- Utilize InterQual criteria and work with medical center staff to ensure appropriate bed utilization/placement for safe patient care- Participates in interdisciplinary committees/teams/task forces focused on the facilitation of patient flow and organizational performance.- Keep abreast of and effectively communicate bed availability on all inpatient wards/units and the Emergency Department.- Provide direction and participate in the development and implementation of policies and protocol to manage special cases or meet patient needs.- Participate in interdisciplinary care rounds and/or conferences to review treatment goals, optimize resource utilization and to recommend alternate levels of care when acute care is not required or recommended.- Meet/sustain competencies and pass inter-rater reliability tests related InterQual criteria. Work Schedule: The Bed Control RN's will work 2:30pm - 11:00 pm Monday through Friday .
