The Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center is recruiting for primary research support to principal investigators of the VA who are performing Clinical Research and require the skills of a clinical nurse. The research nurse is responsible for coordinating all aspects of the assigned research with the study Principal Investigator and research staff. The individual is directly accountable to the study Principal Investigator and is responsible to the A/O, Research and Development, Charleston VA Medical Center. The Research nurse is responsible for the daily management of research studies conducted at the Charleston VAMC, which includes: 1) recruitment and screening of participants; 2) providing informed consent with documentation in VA electronic medical record; 3) scheduling all testing visits; 4) administration and completion of surveys and case report forms; 5) specimen processing and shipping; 6) oversight of participant payments; 7) initial assessment, documentation, and referral of adverse events; 8) reporting and correspondence to regulatory and oversight committees; 9) maintenance of the regulatory study binder and participant research folders; 10) performing quality assurance of all study activities; 11) maintenance of basic recruitment and retention statistics; 12) coordination with other research staff; 13) performing clinically related duties as needed by protocol. The Research nurse maintains a medical license and is experienced with diverse patient populations and is focused on the safety of participants, the majority of whom are veterans with multiple medical problems. Duties will include review of the medical records for eligibility and adverse events, as well as regular interactions with clinical providers to facilitate and document follow-up. The research nurse will facilitate volunteer study participation by routinely scheduling study appointments to coordinate with routine clinical care appointments. Combined clinical and research experience is utilized for accurate internal data safety monitoring and reporting to the VA Institutional Review Board of Record and the VA Research and Development Committee. However, the clinical care responsibilities are limited to interactions with participants as performed under the purview of research.
