Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center is seeking a strategic leader, with expertise in managing both clinical and academic operations, to join our team as Operations Director, Department of Neurology and the Neuroscience Institute.
As a key member of the leadership team of the Department of Neurology and the Neuroscience Institute, our Director of Operations will serve as the business partner to Krish Sathian, MBBS, PhD, FANA, FASNR, FAAN, Chair of Neurology and Director, Neuroscience Institute. Reporting to the Vice President of Operations, the Operations Director will support Dr. Sathian’s mission to advance the next phase of the Department’s and Institute’s growth with expansion of both clinical and academic activities and build synergy across the multiple missions The individual selected for this newly created position will provide daily operational oversight in all areas to include clinical offices, support services, patient care areas and College of Medicine (COM) staff including research labs. This position also provides operational oversight for the Penn State Clinical Neurophysiology Lab. The Operations Director will also provide strategic and operational direction to optimize and streamline the relevant administrative processes.
Our Operations Director will collaborate with Neuroscience core departments: Neural and Behavioral Sciences, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Psychiatry, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and multidisciplinary centers of excellence (spine, stroke, pain, epilepsy, etc.) across Penn State Health as well as interface and partner with affiliate departments and faculty. A key goal is growth of the research portfolio, including basic research and clinical trials. To this end, the Operations Director will partner with the Chair, Institute Director and faculty leaders to develop and implement plans to support the growth of research (particularly NIH grants) in the Department of Neurology and the Neuroscience Institute. To achieve this, the department leader will be expected to build strong cross-functional relationships, leverage organizational resources and to develop and implement plans to recruit and retain physician-scientists, research and clinical faculty and appropriate department staff.
The Operations Director will partner with the Chair, Institute Director and faculty leaders to ensure clinical faculty and support staff work together to enable the Department and Institute to meet key organizational goals including timely access for our patients, maximal efficiency of outpatient and inpatient clinical services, optimal clinical productivity and, importantly, the wellness of our providers and support staff. The Operations Director will also partner with the Chair, Institute Director and faculty leaders to ensure their success in the educational mission and in participation in the community. This leader will work closely with Medical Group leadership to align the department and larger Medical Group strategy, and to utilize conventional and where appropriate, novel organizational metrics to develop business cases and operating plans necessary to gain support to invest in staffing, capital and operating expenses.
As a leader critical to the development of team members, this individual addresses the Department’s and Institute’s human resources issues in an institutionally diverse environment and is accountable for evaluating talent and helping staff members achieve their goals.
A master’s degree in healthcare administration, finance, health policy, public health, or a related field emphasizing management and accounting.
Minimum of five (5) years of managerial experience in healthcare administration.
Documented successful clinical and/or academic management experience, both operational and fiscal, including prior Profit & Loss responsibilities.
Demonstrated leadership in strategic planning in healthcare management, including resource allocation processes.
Operational understanding of the academic setting and administration, its diverse constituents, and complex healthcare organizational structures.
Experience in an academic medical setting preferred.
