Advanced Practice Registered Nurses / Physician Assistants
Purpose Statement / Position Summary
This positionis responsible forproviding clinical leadership and expertise in the delivery of patient carefor critically ill patients that require care in the Intensive Care Unit. Responsibilities include direct clinical services for the critically ill adult patients with multi-system failure, within institutional guidelines and utilizing evidence-based clinical practice standards under the supervision of the Critical Care Medicine physicians. This position will alsoassist with the educational development of the staff related to critical care medicine. The position will assist in maintaining hospital compliance with regulatory standards, benchmarking programs and performance improvement initiatives. This position will also assist with the case management of critical care patientsto maintain strict adherence to quality and cost controls.
Requires strong working knowledge of performance improvement tools and methodologies, and effective analytical, organizational, and communication skills with ability to direct projects and assist with team building.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities of the Job
Demonstrates advanced knowledge and skill in diagnosis, management, and evaluation of actual or potential needs of patients and families with critical illnesses.
Obtains patient health histories and complete physical examinations and documents findings in accordance with organizational requirements.
Assess patients for change in status and institutes appropriate interventions, including initiation of necessary emergency interventions and consultation with supervising physician.
Transmits orders and interprets appropriate diagnostic and laboratory tests; communicating the rationale, preparation, and anticipated risks and benefits of the procedure(s) to patient’s family, staff, and other healthcare staff.
Member of the Rapid Response and Code Blue Teams.
Initiates cardiopulmonary resuscitation and cardiac massage; airway management including bag and mask ventilation, endotracheal intubation and extubation, endotracheal tube repositioning; ventilator management, orders administration of life support medications and defibrillation according to Advance Cardiac Life Support standards.
Under physician direction and the Critical Care Medicine Nurse Practitioner-Standardized Procedure may perform the following procedures: insert/manage arterial catheters and central venous catheters, manage ventilator settings, remove chest tubes, and other procedures appropriate within an ICU environment.
Demonstrates knowledge of current research and evidenced-base decision-making in all clinical practice.
Provides patient/family centered care by communicating with the patient/family regarding the changing health care needs of the patient
Addresses the age specific competencies of the population served (see checklist)
Provide nocturnal coverage (7P-7A) for the Intensive Care Unit
Three to five years’ experience as a Registered Nurse in a mixed specialty intensive care unit setting that includes cardiac and neurosurgery
Experienced NP with cardiac and neuro surgery preferred
Experience in quality improvement theory, change theory, adult learning principles, and team building
Knowledgeable of current research and strength in translating research into everyday practice
Effective problem solving skills
Ability to relate to a variety of professionals in the Intensive Care Unit setting
Good interpersonal and communication skills
Possession of a valid California License as a Registered Nurse
Certification by the State of California, Board of Registered Nursing as a Nurse Practitioner
Certification by a National Organization/Association as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner
A current certification from the American Heart Association in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
A current certification from the Neurocritical Care Society in Emergency Neurological Life Support (ENLS)
A current certification in the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
A current certification in Cardiac Surgery Advanced Life support (CALS)
Furnishing License (in order to prescribe independently)
Current DEA License (if applicable)
Malpractice Insurance Coverage as required by the Medical Staff Bylaws.
